A Little Cam History

Over the last few years MIS has had many different Web cams in use at many different places. We enjoy seeing other live cams on the net and have thoroughly enjoyed creating our own! One of the first cams, was pointed out of the original MIS office window towards JP's barn and driveway.
This shot of a snow was saved from that period as well as this April 1996 image of Bill Martel, Carolyn Philbrook and Jason Philbrook. Later that year Jason and crew setup the "Live Chick Cam". This site was very popular for a while, until the chicks were put out to pasture. All of these shots were taken with the original B/W QuickCam cameras.

In Damariscotta, the "other Jason" and crew have also had their share of Cam fun, although none of the early shots seemed to have survived. The Damarsicotta office has a cam that has been running for about two years, that has been linked on and off to various pages. (There will be a link here when its running again).

The DamaCam

The DamaCam has been in operation off and on over the last year or so. It has proven to be a very popular place for people from here and all over the world. We recently invested (see below) in a new set of equipment to enhance the image quality and as you'll see, the new DamaCam puts out an outstanding picture. The link below will take you to the live image and there are older picture and links to other DamaCam images below.

The new "DamaCam" was installed on November 17th. It is a Canon ES2500 Hi-8 Camcorder mounted on a Tripod in a livingroom on Hopkins Hill in Newcastle, Maine. It sends its signal out over a 50' standard coax cable to a "Buzz" box made by Iomega. The Buzz grabs a frame every so often and writes it to disk. We then employ a nifty program called "SpyCam" to auto-ftp the picture to the webserver over the 24/7 dedicated modem connection. Nifty stuff. The camera has an image resolution much better than standard coax cable signal standard will send, so we eagerly awaited the arrival of the SVHS cable. It was worth the wait. We had high expectations for the image quality. All we can say is WOW!

The LIVE Lobstah Cam

The picture below is coming from a lobster trap in the Habor of Spruce Head, Maine!
